If you are faced with Keloids condition, can you undertake a hair transplant procedure? Is it safe to undergo any surgery if you have Keloids or do you need to follow certain precautions? After all, what are Keloids?
In this educational video, Dr John Watts – a noted dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad – demystifies Keloids and what one has to look out for before undergoing a hair transplant surgery in such a condition. He has successfully performed over 2000+ hair transplant procedures so far.
Introduction:
Keloids are often a cause of concern during surgical procedures for those patients who have such tendencies. Though the cause is not known, Keloids tendencies are known to surface in some patients.
They are a kind of inflammatory and raised growth with hard extra growth due to the formation of extra scar tissues. They delay the healing process of the skin. Keloids can form following a cut or incision mark during surgery or when the skin faces some accidental injury or trauma. They are not life-threatening on their own but can affect one’s aesthetics.
“This a tendency that the patient with Keloids deals with. It can form on any part of the body such as the face or chest. Generally, when the body faces any cut or injury, the skin heals but this does not happen in case a patient has Keloids tendency. The need is to identify patients with such tendencies before undertaking any surgery and provide medical treatment for its resolution,” explained Dr John.
Flashback Case:
During his early days of practice as a dermatologist, Dr John Watts narrated how he encountered a Kleoids case. “I used to get referrals from several doctors for performing minor skin procedures. Once a 20-year-old girl was referred by a doctor for treatment after she developed hard skin scar tissue growth following an ear piercing. She had Kleoids tendency and I advised her against a surgical removal,” recalled Dr John Watts.
Explaining how such patients with Keloids need to be treated, Dr John said that direct surgical solution must be avoided as their condition can get aggravated following incision marks.
“They should be given intralesional steroid injection or other fibrolysis treatment that may work for them before they undertake any surgery, not just hair transplant surgery,” informed Dr John.
Hair Transplant & Keloids:
Explaining the precautions that one must take before undertaking a hair transplant procedure with Keloids condition, Dr John said that such patients must clearly explain their condition to their transplant surgeon.
“It is because undertaking hair transplant procedures in such patients may be risky as the extraction of hair grafts from the donor area and implant of the harvested grafts in the recipient region needs incision. They may aggravate their condition due to injuries on the scalp,” explained Dr John.
While pointing out a solution for such cases, Dr John said that they perform test hair grafts on such patients to be sure if the hair transplant procedure would be safe on them. “We may extract 50-100 hair grafts from the donor region of the scalp and implant them on the recipient region and wait for 3-4 months. If we notice any Keloids effect on the scalp due to the minor incision injuries, such patients may be advised against undertaking any further hair transplant procedure,” said Dr John.
However, such patients are may be considered safe to undertake hair transplant procedures in future if they successfully pass the test graft procedure after their medical treatment for Keloids.
